Pavlos Ioannides (b. 1995 in Nicosia, Cyprus) lives and works in Berlin. He received a MFA from the Villa Arson-School of Fine Arts in Nice/France in 2022.
Pavlos Ioannides works with multiple media, juxtaposing large format charcoal drawings, oil paintings and photography within installation spaces. His solitary pieces resonate with each other in a playful and confrontational environment, that often deploys industrial and architectural structures. These installations invite its audience to engage on different sensual levels, recalling memories from childhood and rebellion, as the pieces are informed by the artist’s autobiographical traces.
Through his analogue drawing technique Ioannides explores the relationship between the subconscious and the hand, that involves the movement of the entire body. By focusing on the most elemental sources (canvas, charcoal, water), Ioannides also questions social and economical control in an era of AI and global capitalism.
Having grown up in a working class environment in the suburbs of Nicosia and after serving two mandatory years in the military, Ioannides’ first expressed himself though the classical piano. The impulse of drawing soon replaced the mathematical structures of music, yet his orchestration of lines on canvas are clearly influenced by rhythm, sound and movement.
